Flora and Fauna by Pen-umbra Flora and Fauna by Pen-umbra
Growing up in Michigan has given me a deep appreciation for Fall. Most of my favorite memories of Michigan involve long walks through vibrant forests, crisp air that turned my nose red, crunchy leaves, roasted almonds and hot spiced apple cider...

A lot of people look at fall as something sad or melancholy as everything begins to die before winter. But it's not so! This is the final frenzy from flora and fauna as everyone scurries to prepare for winter. There is so much to do, so much going on! Even the wind seems to push us on, hurrying us along that sweeping path toward the cold and dark months ahead.

Materials used:
Shoe box
Paper
Balsa wood
White glue
Black and gold sharpies
Water colors

Thanks! I use scrapbooking paper, since it's thicker and meant to last. These can take anywhere from 12 hours to over 50, like this one did.

Your artwork is stunning! I was wondering - how long does it take to do this stuff? You've got me interested in that. :)

Awww, thank you! These can take a long time. This one in particular was 4 weeks--1.5 weeks of drawing/planning and 2.5 weeks of cutting/gluing/structuring. Over 50 hours in total.

Try something small to start with. This was my first attempt: [link]

Thank you! When I moved from Michigan to California, I was very surprised to see how different the forests are! Not just the trees, either. Wildfires frequently clear out underbrush in California, leaving it open and the trees far apart. By comparison, the over-grown forests of Michigan are considerably cozier. :aww:

Yours is by far my favorite of the entries. I love how you've perfectly captured autumn's vibrant colors and even capturing the movement of the wind itself! :wow: As a fellow Michigander, fall is my favorite season for many of the same reasons you mentioned in the comments. And your diorama just portrays it all so perfectly! :iconclapplz: Good luck! :aww:

Thank you!! :aww: I love that this is bringing all the Michiganders out of the woodwork, so to speak. I think fall is Michigan's best time of year. It does a wonderful summer (swimming in the lakes! cherries! warm weather!) and no one can deny it knows what it's doing with winter, but fall is just such a spectacular display of color!

Oh my days! This is so amazing! Stop being so talented! lol
The detail is amazing, this must have taken you ages! Just curious, did you draw the pattern on the girls coat, or is the pattern on the paper you used?

Thank you so much! It took over 50 hours of work. I was sketching and planning for a week and a half and then actually cutting for 2.5 weeks. And the pattern on the girl's coat is from the paper! Good eyes--all my friends and family thought I drew it, but even I'm not that crazy for detail! ;)

You. Are. Crazy. !!!
Unbelievable!!!
I could never ever muster the patience to cut out and glue together such little paper pieces as you just did here!
It looks great! Really. A great, great work.

Could you tell me how tall the guy is? Just as a reference. So I can better realize how crazy and great your work is! ^^

Thank you! I really like small, meticulous projects, so I loved this. But yes, it takes patience. It's a good idea to do just a couple of elements at a time, then take a break. That way you get a small sense of accomplishment a few times a day. ;)

The guy is about 5" I think. Smaller than my hand, but larger than my palm. The tallest trees are 26cm (exactly 15cm above the box, which is 11cm).
