Artist's Comments

I love Michelangelo's David. His somewhat arrogant contrapposto stance is offset by the worry and fear in his brow. He's literally placed on a pedistal before he's done anything good and great. He himself is made as a giant before he's even faced his own.

To me, he's a representation of youth, because isn't that what youth is? A juxtaposition of child and adult? Always trying to come off as confidant and capable, but still not quite sure how to do anything. Weighed down by pressures to be great and better without even knowing what obstacles are out there.

Michelangelo himself was just barely out of his own youth when he started the David. I wanted to illustrate a young man carving a symbol of youth, both emerging from the rough to form their own greatness.

Of course, that's just my interpretation. ;)

wow, that's actually a very accurate interpretation.
According to history, Michelangelo tried to portray young David before the battle with Goliath, wich I think it's one of the defining moments in King David's life, growing from kid to a man. While his pose might seem, like you said, confident and capable, his expression actually shows his fear, worry about the upcoming battle, for the future.
again, a wonderful interpretation:heart:

lol this is probably the loongest comment I've EVER written xD

Great concept! You really put a lot of though into this!

Thank you! I had fun with it. :D

Thanks! I've read a lot of books about Michelangelo, and most of them seem to have pretty different ideas on what David was supposed to represent. But a lot of them think it was actually a representation of Florence's political culture. But what is art if not something that can be read many different ways?

haha, no worries about long comments. I'm pretty sure my description was the longest artists comments I've ever written. ;)

I love that background pattern, especially as it shows up in the light! And I like how the beam of light is positioned, illuminating just Michelangelo and the unfinished bottom section of David. You definitely captured the hugeness of the task in front of the artist.

Well, it's not quite a mop, and its not quite a puppet, but maaan...so, to answer your question, I don't know.

Same story, different versions...and all are true.

Thank you! :aww: I'm so glad you liked the background pattern! I've never done anything like that and was worried about how it'd turn out.

I love the light!

WOW, I love your interpretation! :) It echos my thoughts. Good job on all the shading and lighting!
